On a recent visit to Ottawa, I was delighted to glance toward a street corner and see a life-size bronze statue of Canadian Jazz virtuoso Oscar Peterson seated at his piano. He was depicted as if he had just finished playing and had turned toward his audience. It was clear that the sculptor had succeeded in designing a compelling openness and invitation to be with Oscar and his piano. Ordinary folks can and do “play” the piano and pose for photos beside Oscar on his piano bench.
I watched from a distance as a mother and her young daughter were drawn into the hospitality of this outdoor sculpture. It reminded me of God’s spacious welcome. The girl’s cautious curiosity and wordless wonder as she stared at Oscar made me glad her mom was with her. Like a spiritual director with their directee, the mom could ask or field questions or just be witness to the puzzled astonishment.
What wonderment has drawn your attention recently?
